Established in 1981, Suiderland Plase is a family-owned producer, packer and exporter of quality fresh produce. Environmental sustainability is at the heart of our operations. We work with our growers to protect soil, conserve water, preserve biodiversity and reduce our carbon footprint through renewable energy and responsible farming practices. We actively protect wetlands and bee habitats, reduce plastic and packaging waste, and use reusable bins in our export supply chain. Our aim is to continuously improve our environmental performance while supporting a sustainable future.
Several sustainability initiatives are implemented across Suiderland’s farms and packhouses.
The construction of balancing dams facilitates gravitational irrigation, reducing energy demand. SLP packhouses have solar panels that provide power for the packhouses and cold rooms, with the latter now using only 30% of the power previously required. Changing 75% of the packhouse lighting to LED has also reduced power demand. Supplementary power is used for pumps, workshops and accommodation facilities. Solar geysers and gas stoves are installed at the accommodation facilities.
Fieldwork is planned efficiently to minimise unnecessary tractor use and fuel consumption. Tractors are properly serviced and maintained to ensure efficient operation. Fuel usage is monitored, and fuel storage is carefully controlled, with tanks kept secure. Operators are trained in efficient machinery use. Routes are planned to minimise unnecessary travel, while technology such as GPS tracking is used to monitor vehicle and tractor movements. Performance is regularly compared to identify opportunities for further improvements.
Irrigation champions have been appointed at each site to monitor and improve irrigation practices. Soil moisture probes are used to support efficient irrigation and fertigation by providing information to guide irrigation timing and application.
Ample amount of mulching is applied to optimise water usage efficiency. Suiderland is also investigating the possibility of trials with organic fertiliser.
Following a “reduce, reuse and recycle” approach across all our business units and sites helps to minimise waste. Where feasible, recyclable or compostable packaging materials are used, sourced from environmentally sustainable sources.
