The winery has been recognised on Carbon Heroes for its contributions to sustainability in the following areas:
Situated on Welmoed, one of the first proclaimed farms in the Stellenbosch district, dating back to 1690, Stellenbosch Vineyards is a leading wine producer and exporter, passionate about wine and proud of our rich heritage. Sustainability is central to our long-term business strategy. We believe producing exceptional wines goes hand in hand with protecting the environment, supporting our employees, and ensuring responsible governance.
Our environmental initiatives focus on reducing our carbon footprint, improving energy efficiency, conserving water, and minimising waste. We monitor our greenhouse gas emissions and implement projects to reduce our environmental impact, including lightweight packaging, recycling, and renewable energy assessments.
Social responsibility is equally important. We are committed to a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace, supported by training, skills development, fair employment practices, and ethical labour practices. As part of the AdVini South Africa group, we contribute to a broader sustainability vision aligned with international best practices and global climate ambitions.
As a winery, energy is required throughout our operations, including grape processing, fermentation, and cooling. We continuously monitor our electricity consumption to identify opportunities for improved efficiency while maintaining product quality and operational excellence.
Looking ahead, Stellenbosch Vineyards is investing in renewable energy. During 2027, the company will commence implementation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This project forms part of our long-term sustainability strategy and commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reliance on grid electricity, and improving energy security.
A key contributor to our lower direct fuel consumption is the use of electric forklifts throughout our winery and warehouse operations.
Stellenbosch Vineyards is committed to responsible water management through the implementation of water-saving practices across our cellar operations. Washing water is recycled where possible, and efficient cleaning techniques help reduce overall water consumption. Our on-site effluent treatment plant ensures wastewater is treated and safely reused for irrigation in compliance with environmental requirements. Employees receive training on water conservation and responsible water use to support continuous improvement.
Annual soil analysis and monitoring to ensure healthy soils of irrigated areas.
Stellenbosch Vineyards is committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity within its industrial site through responsible land management practices. The site has been mapped to identify biodiversity areas, with 52% of the property dedicated to biodiversity conservation
Materials such as packaging, cardboard, glass, plastics, and other recyclable waste are diverted from landfill through approved recycling channels. Ongoing waste monitoring and employee awareness initiatives support continuous improvement and promote a circular economy approach.
