Neethlingshof Estate, a historic landmark near Stellenbosch dating back to 1692, produces premium terroir-driven wines for local and international markets. The estate embraces biodiversity-friendly and regenerative farming, conserving natural areas and enhancing water and energy efficiency through sustainable practices.
Neethlingshof monitors soil moisture using 20 neutron probes to optimise irrigation. Neethlingshof farms 8.83 ha of old vines as dryland vineyards. Water from cellar processes is recycled and used to irrigate the vineyards.
Soil Health
Neethlingshof uses a balanced approach, combining: Organic fertilizers, such as Guanaboost, and Inorganic fertilizers, specifically NPS.
Biodiversity
Neethlingshof reduces insecticide use by using biological controls against pests like the Kalander beetle. Wheat cover crops attract guinea fowl, which feed on both the wheat and beetle eggs. A “water shoot” is also left on each vine to hinder the beetle’s movement into the canopy.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Grape waste is composted through a service provider. Byproducts like lees and wine tartrates are recycled. Glass, paper, cardboard, and plastic are all sorted and recycled to minimize landfill contributions.
