The farm has been recognised as a Hero for its contributions to sustainability in the following areas:
Situated 160 km northwest of Cape Town, near the town of Ceres, Howbill Farming is dedicated to producing top-quality pome and stone fruit for both export and local markets. At the heart of our business is a commitment to sustainability — ensuring that future generations will inherit healthy soils, clean water, and thriving biodiversity.
Howbill Farming has a 1 MW solar farm that powers our operations, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The upcoming installation of battery backup will allow us to maximize efficiency and further lower our carbon footprint.
By investing in precision-adapted farming equipment, we significantly reduce fuel consumption, cutting greenhouse gas emissions while improving efficiency.
Howbill Farming is committed to careful water stewardship:
Advanced water monitoring prevents over-irrigation and waste. Drip irrigation systems ensure water is used effectively. Recycling water minimizes wastage across the farm.
Soil is the foundation of everything we grow. Our regenerative practices aim to increase soil carbon and fertility through: composting, cover cropping, reduced tillage.
We keep the use of inorganic fertilizers to a minimum, protecting soil health and the wider environment.
At Howbill Farming, protecting and restoring biodiversity is central to our sustainability journey. We are in the midst of a program to remove invasive alien plants, converting them into compost that is returned to the orchards. We also establish buffer zones to protect natural ecosystems and reduce harmful practices.
Our packhouse operates a full recycling system, supported by a dedicated team. We are also expanding waste reduction and recycling practices to households, building awareness about the impact of waste and the benefits of a circular approach.
