springfield estate a Carbon Hero

Springfield Estate is dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint. We strive to work as naturally as possible, both in the vineyard and the cellar, in order to create exceptional wines that reflect the terroir of our region – Springfield Estate

Springfield's Sustainability Initiatives

Springfield Estate have installed 440kW of renewable energy and have more in the works. The farm also recycles their glass and packaging waste, and reuses CO₂ produced during fermentation in the cellar. In addition, Springfield Estate is committed to preserving the natural environment of the estate. They cultivate natural wetlands and green belts, and work actively to eradicate invasive flora species on the farm.

Solar Energy

Springfield has 440kW of solar, with more in planning, used for the cellar, office, and irrigation pumps.

Efficient Fuel Use

The farm does most of the farming with quadbikes, which has lower fuel consumption than diesel tractors.

Reduced Fertiliser Use

Springfield Estate irrigates using ozonated water which increases nitrogen content and reduces the fertiliser requirements on the farm.

Conserving Water

The farm conserves water with drip irrigation and a deeper reservoir. Cellar wastewater is cleaned and purified through a wetland system and reused.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Glass, paper and plastic is recycled by a third party. Organic waste is composted, and wastewater is purified.

Improving Soil Health

The farm runs an extensive cover crop and mulching regime. They make their own compost from chicken manure, grape skins, straw and wood chips (from removed invasive species) that is worked into the soil each winter.

Biodiversity

Springfield Estate has set aside green belts for biodiversity corridors, spraying is minimized by using natural predators, and strictly remove invasive aliens (black wattle & blue gum).
