h.l. Hall & sons a Carbon Hero

Halls is consciously committed to sustainability throughout our value chain. The CCC carbon calculator has provided an essential tool for clarity on carbon emissions and assisted in driving key focus areas to achieve carbon reduction targets – Halls

H.L. Hall & Sons' Sustainability Initiatives

Responsible water use, stringent IPM programmes, solar panel installations, a reduction in food waste and the elimination of single use plastic packaging are some of Halls’ main drivers to achieve a business that aspires to respect and nurture the precious planet we share.

Solar Energy

The Halls packhouse solar panel project was completed in February 2022 and has resulted in a 24% reduction in grid electricity usage to date.

Fuel Savings

Fuel-based pruning equipment is being replaced by electrical alternatives.

Soil Health

Pruned branches are chipped and mulched returning this “green gold” to the orchard floor where an abundance of soil life can be found. Soil carbon levels are monitored.

Water Use Optimization

Soil moisture is monitored using continuous logging probes. The installation of low-flow irrigation technology helps optimise and track water use.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Halls Every Piece of Fruit Matters campaign has resulted in a 23% reduction in food waste since 2019. All Halls branded products in Europe have been reformulated with plastic-free packaging.

Reduced Synthetic Fertiliser Use

Halls constantly strives to reduce the use of inorganic-based fertilisers through targeted soil and leaf sampling programmes. Semi-organic fertilisers are used in some orchards.

Biodiversity

The Hall’s biodiversity garden is a living testimony to positive environmental impact. It sustains an abundance of fauna & flora, including African blue basil (Ocimum spp) providing a habitat for bees and other insect pollinators. Spekboom (Portulacaria afra), a natural carbon “sponge”, assists in the fight against global warming.

CARBON HEROES QR CODE

Through this digital recognition platform, we celebrate the Carbon Heroes taking part in the Confronting Climate Change (CCC) Initiative for their considerable effort in calculating and understanding their carbon emissions.

Each Carbon Hero has their own digital QR code that can be displayed on their website and other marketing material, linking directly to their individual profile on the Carbon Heroes website.

The QR code provides a simple and innovative way for customers to learn about each Carbon Hero’s carbon offsetting and other sustainability initiatives, as well as engage with them on social media and other marketing channels.

With the Carbon Heroes QR code we aim to support a global transition towards sustainable development by recognising and celebrating the positive environmental impact of each Carbon Hero. By having a transparent display of their commitment to reducing emissions, Carbon Heroes demonstrate their dedication to a sustainable future, while building trust in their brand.
