About Diemersdal Estate

The Diemersdal Wine Estate, situated in the glorious Cape Winelands of South Africa, lies on the cool slopes of the Dorstberg, Durbanville. The Diemersdal history dates as far back as 1698 to the time of Simon van der Stel and the very beginning of South African winemaking. Since 1885, six generations of the Louw family have been practising the art of crafting fine wines at Diemersdal.
The main varieties grown on the estate are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage. Some 200 hectares of vines are grown in dryland conditions, allowing the grapes to ripen uniformly, developing rich, concentrated flavours. Today Diemersdal Wine Estate represents true Cape hospitality, welcoming local and international visitors to the tasting venue as well as an atmospheric country restaurant.

Diemersdal's Sustainability Initiatives

Every part of the Diemersdal Estate is individually managed and evaluated.

Fuel Wise

Diemersdal, as of 2023, makes use of a new forklift which is battery operated, instead of using LP-gas.

Optimising Fertiliser

Diemersdal utilises biological management of pests in their vineyards instead of spraying Mealybug, and the farm makes use of rolling instead of spraying cover crops. Regular soil analyses are completed in order to minimize fertilizer additions. The farm uses GPS mapping for fertilizer optimisation.

Water Wise

Diemersdal uses high pressure hoses and there is no irrigation of vineyards.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Diemersdal has changed to 3 Row sprayers, minimizing tractor use by two thirds. There is less filtration to minimize organic waste, which is sent to Bren-o-chem (since 2021). Plant based corks have been in use since 2019, which have a zero carbon footprint and are recyclable. From 2024 onwards, Diemersdal will make use of screwcaps with recyclable liners. There is a formal recycling management program on the farm.

Promoting Soil Health

Diemersdal rolls instead of sprays cover crops, grape skins during harvest are used as natural fertilizers and the soil is opened up before the winter rains. 10 ha of Swartland Shale Renosterveld is managed in conjunction with Cape Nature.

Through this digital recognition platform, we celebrate the Carbon Heroes taking part in the Confronting Climate Change (CCC) Initiative for their considerable effort in calculating and understanding their carbon emissions.

Each Carbon Hero has their own digital QR code that can be displayed on their website and other marketing material, linking directly to their individual profile on the Carbon Heroes website.

The QR code provides a simple and innovative way for customers to learn about each Carbon Hero’s carbon offsetting and other sustainability initiatives, as well as engage with them on social media and other marketing channels.

With the Carbon Heroes QR code we aim to support a global transition towards sustainable development by recognising and celebrating the positive environmental impact of each Carbon Hero. By having a transparent display of their commitment to reducing emissions, Carbon Heroes demonstrate their dedication to a sustainable future, while building trust in their brand.
